What Every Woman Over 40 Should Know About Collagen

It started with my knees.

I remember thinking, “This must be the weight gain.” Every time I stood up or tried to walk a little faster, I felt it. Stiff. Achy. Tired.

But I brushed it off like so many of us do. Life was busy, I was going through a lot, and I figured this was just part of the midlife slowdown.

It wasn’t until the pain moved into my hips — deeper, more intense, and harder to ignore — that I started to ask:

“What is really happening in my body?”

And that’s when I discovered something most of us don’t think much about:

collagen.

🧬 What Is Collagen — and Why Does It Matter?

Collagen is a natural protein our body makes. It acts like a cushion, glue, and support structure all in one. It holds us together — helping our joints move, our skin stay firm, our eyes stay clear, and our spine stay strong.

But here’s the part no one talks about:

We start losing collagen in our mid-to-late 20s, and by the time we hit our 40s and 50s, we’re losing up to 1% per year — sometimes more.

And that slow decline? It doesn’t just show up in our skin. It shows up in the places we use every single day.

👣 Where Collagen Loss Hits the Hardest

I used to think collagen was just for skin. But now I know:

The pain in my joints, the creaking in my hips, and the way my body started to feel “off” — were all signs of collagen depletion.

Here’s where the loss really starts to take a toll:

  • Joints – knees, hips, spine
  • Skin – dryness, sagging, fine lines
  • Eyes – dryness, blurry vision
  • Flexibility + movement – feeling stiff or achy without a clear reason

If you’ve been feeling any of that lately, you’re not broken. Your body just needs support.

🧓 Why Collagen Becomes a Bigger Deal with Age

Our bodies naturally make collagen… but the older we get, the less efficient that process becomes.

And with the added effects of stress, sun exposure, hormonal shifts, inflammation, and even poor sleep, it’s no wonder things start feeling off.

This is especially true for women in perimenopause and menopause. The drop in estrogen can accelerate collagen breakdown — especially in joints, skin, and connective tissue.

But there’s good news. And that’s why I’m writing this.

💪 You Can Support Collagen Naturally

Here’s what I’ve learned (and what I’ve started doing myself):

  • Drink water throughout the day
  • Use clean protein daily (I start with a Life Shake every morning)
  • Add in nutrients that support collagen building like vitamin C
  • And most importantly… consider adding a high-quality collagen supplement — one your body can actually absorb and use

That last piece made the biggest difference for me. It’s why I’m testing something new — and why I’m inviting a small group of women to do it with me.
